PRESS RELEASE - 26 October 2026
Kamineni Academy of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Hyderabad wins the XXI edition of Fujio Cup Quiz (FCQ) at 21st anniversary NCRM NICHE 2026, an International Regenerative Medicine Meet.
Novel technologies to address diseases originating due to protein-misfolding at cellular level and Cell based therapies for Ocular Surface Diseases presented

Chennai, 26th October, 2026: Dr. V. Sameer Kumar Reddy and Dr. Chava Aravind Kumar from Kamineni Academy of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Hyderabad, India bagged the prestigious Fujio Cup in the XXI edition of this unique active knowledge gaining (AKG) event, the Fujio Cup Quiz (FCQ) 2026. Ms. Ganga Anand Desai & Mr. Amith Mathew, Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research, Chennai, India who were from the defending champions’ institute turned runner up. Another team from Ramachandra Institute and a team from The Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Guindy, Chennai, India participated in the Finals of the FCQ. The preliminary and pre-final rounds had take-home assignments and online quizzing, following which these four teams from the contested 80 teams, made it to the finals.
In the Interdisciplinary Conclave (IDC) of the NCRM NICHE 2026, the 21st inaugural anniversary commemorative event of Nichi-In Centre for Regenerative Medicine (NCRM), which until 2016, held in Chennai, India, from 2017 to 2019, conducted in Tokyo, Japan and from 2020 held as an virtual international event under the sole organizing responsibility of M/s GN Corporation, Japan based on a licensing arrangement with NCRM, Prof. Dr. Muralidhar L. Hegde, Department of Neurosurgery at Houston Methodist Research Institute, Texas, USA, presented his work on the development of SH-SY5Y cell lines and their significance in addressing diseases originating due to protein misfolding at the cellular level and their implications in alpha-synculein misfolding, gut dysbiosis, neuro-developmental and neurodegenerative diseases in which he had earlier collaborated with NCRM NICHE and GN Corporation.

The plenary lecture featured talk by Dr. Sanjeev P. Srinivas from Darshan Eye Care & Surgical Centre, Chennai, India, speaking on cell-based therapies for ocular surface diseases. Dr. P. Parikumar from The Light Eye Hospital, Dharmapuri; Dr. Namitha Bhuvaneswari Professor & Head of Ophthalmology, Meenakshi Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai, India and Dr. M. Rita Hepsi Rani, Head, Department of Ophthalmology, Government Thoothukudi Medical College Hospital, India, served as panelists and discussed the limitations of present techniques to address corneal limbal stem cell deficiency and the need to develop synthetic alternatives to existing natural scaffolds, as well as enhance corneal limbal cell-based therapies to treat unilateral corneal limbal stem cell deficiency. The NCRM team recognized the contribution of Dr Srinivas K Rao, chief consultant of Darshan eye care in studies reporting corneal endothelial cell transport, corneal buttons preservation with Regional Institute of Ophthalmology and Government Ophthalmic Hospital (RIOGOH), Chennai, India and the corneal endothelial clinical study with Light Eye Hospital.
The NCRM team explained their work of two decades, during which they have brought several regenerative medicine technologies to clinically applicable solutions, which included the single-step simplified cell therapy, BHES-HAUS (Buccal Epithelium Hashed and Encapsulated in Scaffold–Hybrid Approach to Urethral Stricture), for which a clinical study has been completed. The study demonstrated successful outcomes, including significant improvement in Qmax, with patients remaining free from self-clean intermittent catheterization. The outcomes were presented at the American Urological Association (AUA) 2026 Conference in the USA. They also explained about the application of Festigel for bone regeneration in dentistry in periodontal and orthodontic applications.
To our knowledge, this is the only active knowledge gaining (AKG) event in the field of stem cells and regenerative medicine being conducted regularly and continuously for more than 20 years with such propagation of interdisciplinary research has helped us in the tech-transfer of cell therapy solution to Japan, the BEES-HAUS (Buccal epithelium Expanded and Encapsulated in Scaffold–Hybrid Approach to Urethral Stricture) approved under act on safety of regenerative medicine of Japan, commented the experts from NCRM.
