23rd August 2026, Kofu, Japan: Buccal Epithelium Hashed and Encapsulated in Scaffold–Hybrid Approach to Urethral Stricture (BHES-HAUS) cell therapy a single-sitting regenerative cell therapy procedure for male urethral stricture disease, whose encouraging results were presented at the American Urological Association (AUA) 2026, will be demonstrated live at the 31st Annual Conference of the Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry Association of Urologists (TAPASUCON) on 11th September 2026 by Dr. Suryaprakash (Sun Institute of Urology), who is a pioneer of this technology. Registration is available at: https://tapasucon2026.com/register.php Such novel endoscopic cell-based therapies with the potential to prevent urethral stricture recurrence by engraftment of transplanted buccal mucosal cells when compared with procedures such as buccal mucosal graft urethroplasty, yielded comparable functional outcomes in terms of maximum urinary flow (Qmax) as published in the journal Bladder. The BHES-HAUS cell therapy which provides epithelial coverage after urethrotomy yields superior Qmax, recurrence free interval and no requirement of self clean-intermittent catheterization (CIC) compared to DVIU or balloon dilatation alone.
TAPASUCON is the Annual Conference of the Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry Urologists. The BHES-HAUS cell therapy has yielded successful outcomes in patients with urethral stricture, with no need for clean intermittent self-catheterization during the six months follow-up. Since it is a simple, single-sitting technique, any urologist with basic surgical infrastructure for endoscopic urethral procedures can perform the BHES-HAUS procedure, which was developed, taking support from GN Corporation, Japan, especially in making the Festigel scaffold suitable for relevant applications.
Earlier studies of BEES-HAUS (Buccal Epithelium Expanded and Encapsulated in Scaffold–Hybrid Approach to Urethral Stricture) cell therapy has proven the engraftment of the buccal mucosal cells encapsulated in Festigel scaffold in both animal models and clinical studies in patients. Dr. Suryaprakash opined that this BEES-HAUS involves cell culture and it will be useful for long-segment strictures with moderate spongiofibrosis and also for strictures in the ureter. Dr. Gnanasekaran and team are planning to undertake research on this advanced cell culture-based technology along with the Multidisciplinary Research Unit (MDU) of the Madurai Medical College.
